Raindrops
Posted by ashley @ 1:29 am on June 20th
High-speed photographs of most raindrops nearing the earth show them to be more like mushroom tops or hamburger buns – not at all tear-shaped.
The falling speed of raindrops is directly related to their size. Small drops, those less than 2 mm in diameter, tend to remain round as they fall. The surface tension is sufficient to hold it together as a nearly perfect sphere. Larger raindrops fall at a speed around 30 km/h.
Because the air pressure or resistance is greatest on the bottom, the drop flattens there which makes the droplet bulge on top. The side edges bulge out because air pressure there is lower. So the large raindrops tend to be flat on the bottom, round on top and wider than they are high just like a hamburger bun. Really large drops, those say 6 mm or more across, become distorted into a shape rather like a parachute and then they break up into smaller drops.

Coal fire that has burned for 6,000 years
Posted by ashley @ 9:47 pm on June 18th
Burning Mountain is a feature near Wingen, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 300 kilometres (186 mi) north of Sydney just off the New England Highway. It takes its name from a naturally combusting coal seam running underground through the sandstone. Burning Mountain is contained in a Nature Reserve administered by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
A gentle trail from the Park carpark to the site where smoke emanates from the ground takes less than an hour, including the time taken to read the information panels along the route. The area is steeped with Indigenous Australian heritage as well.
According to Smithsonian magazine, “Scientists estimate that Australia’s Burning Mountain, the oldest known coal fire, has burned for 6,000 years.” Original explorers and settlers to the area believed that the smoke coming from the ground was volcanic in origin. The fire is moving in a generally southerly direction at a rate of about one metre per year.

Blueberry Jelly Belly
Posted by ashley @ 12:23 am on June 18th
When Ronald Reagan was governor of California, he needed a snack to help him overcome a pipe smoking habit. He sought something low in fat, not too high in calories, and something that had enough flavor to help him beat the cravings. He found the perfect snack in jelly beans. At first, any jelly bean would do, but that changed in 1976 with the creation of Jelly Belly jelly beans.
Soon, the Jelly Belly became Ronald Reagan’s favorite candy and he kept a jar of them on his desk in the governor’s office. When Regan was elected president, arrangements were made for Jelly Bellies to be served at inaugural festivities. There was only one problem. The color scheme for the inaugural was red, white, and blue. There were red, yellow, white, orange, and black Jelly Bellies, but there was not a blue one. Recipes were tested and the blueberry Jelly Belly was developed specifically for Reagan’s inauguration. A total of 3 ½ tons of red, white, and blue Jelly Bellies were shipped to Washington, D.C. for the festivities. With roughly 800,000 candies per ton, that is 2,800,000 Jelly Belly beans.
