Cryovolcano: A volcano that shoots out ICE rather than lava.

Posted by admin @ 2:09 pm on March 22nd

A cryovolcano (colloquially known as an ice volcano) is a volcano that erupts volatiles such as water, ammonia or methane, instead of molten rock. Cryovolcanoes form on icy moons, and possibly on other low-temperature astronomical objects. Ice volcanoes were first observed on Neptune’s moon Triton during the Voyager 2 flyby in 1989.

You can overdose and die from coffee

Posted by admin @ 12:22 am on March 21st

Caffeine can also be fatal to those who overdose to the extreme. Medical literature contains several reports of people who died after submitting to unorthodox practices such as caffeine injections or coffee enemas. However, the lethal caffeine level is very high more than 10 grams, or the equivalent of 80 to 100 cups of coffee at one sitting.
During the past 40 years, a number of studies have been conducted to determine whether there is any link between coffee consumption and cardiovascular disease. To date, the weight of scientific evidence has established no causal link between coffee consumption and cardiovascular disease.

The blue M&M… A magic pill for spine injuries?

Posted by admin @ 2:01 pm on March 19th

It is an ingredient more likely to raise suspicions among the parents of sweet-toothed children. But the coloring in a blue M&M could harbor secret benefits. Scientists have found that the food dye that gives the sweet its distinctive tint could help patients with spine injuries. The compound, Brilliant Blue G, can block a chemical which makes injuries worse by causing inflammation and destroying cells. This ‘secondary spinal cord damage’ can often cause more problems than the original wound. Researchers found that treatment with Brilliant Blue G reduced the size of the lesion and also improved recovery. But there was a dramatic side-effect on laboratory rats used in the experiment, whose skin temporarily turned bright blue. The dye also needed to be injected into a vein very quickly after a trauma to be effective – within 15 minutes.

Broken Heart Syndrome is real

Posted by admin @ 1:31 pm on March 10th

Shocking news, such as learning of the unexpected death of a loved one, has been known to cause catastrophic events, such as a heart attack. Now, researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered that sudden emotional stress can also result in severe but reversible heart muscle weakness that mimics a classic heart attack.  Patients with this condition, called stress cardiomyopathy but known colloquially as “broken heart” syndrome, are often misdiagnosed with a massive heart attack when, indeed, they have suffered from a days-long surge in adrenalin (epinephrine) and other stress hormones that temporarily “stun” the heart.

Wobbly Earth Means Your Horoscope Is Wrong

Posted by ashley @ 3:43 pm on March 4th

If you look to your horoscope for a preview of your day, look again: You’re probably following somebody else’s supposed fate.

Thanks to Earth’s wobble, astrological signs are, well, bunk. Astrological signs are determined by the position of the sun relative to certain constellations on a person’s day of birth. The problem is, the positions were determined more than 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, the stars have shifted in the night sky so much that horoscope signs are nearly a month off.

The shift is caused by precession, the wobble in the Earth’s axis caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon to the Earth’s equator. Precession popped into the spotlight this week after Minnesota Planetarium Society board member Parke Kunkle told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune about the gap between the astrological and the astronomical view. The story spread around the Internet quickly, but it’s actually old news, Rao said.Source: http://www.livescience.com/9292-wobbly-earth-means-horoscope-wrong.html

So here are the “real” dates of astrological signs, according to astronomers:

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.

Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.

Pisces: March 11-April 18.

Aries: April 18-May 13.

Taurus: May 13-June 21.

Gemini: June 21-July 20.

Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.

Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.

Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.

Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.

Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.

Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.

Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.
